Chili bath oil

In 2018 we introduced this versatile emulsifier that helps you create easily rinsable waterless cleansing products such as:

a scrub bar

a facial cleansing stick

a beard wash

an oil-to-milk shower oil

The possibilities are endless and you can create a huge broad spectrum of waterless (and preservative-free) cleansing products that turn to a milk by adding water and are easily rinsable and leave a silky but non-greasy skin feel.

These formulations are extremely easy to make because they are almost one-pot formulations, with nohassle of adding a preservative and adjusting the pH (as always you still need to run your stability and microbial testing at least during the development phase).

You can use this emulsifier in liquid formulations such as cleansing oils, shower and bath oils, massage oils etc. These formulations are made @RT and are one-pot. The viscosity of the product is always a runny  and pourable oil and you can not manipulate the viscosity of the final product. By using butters, waxes and fatty alcohols (obviously in hot process) you can create a variety of balms and sticks that are still easily rinsable.

As always, the stability, performance, appearance, rinsing and after-feel are dependant on the choice of your material and the applied concentration of the emulsifier. We usually recommend an application dosage between 10-15%. If you use oils that are semi-solid at room temperature or become solid in winter, then your finished product will become opaque or even may sediment at lower temperatures. If you use a high dosage of a heavy oil with a very high content of stearic acid, then the skin feel will be not as smooth as when you use a light-feel oil such as macademia or poppy seed or perilla oil.

To give you some inspiration, we have created a bath oil with a blend of oils with varying polarities. This not only creates a beautiful transparent oil, it easily emulsifies in water and creates a milk that is easily rinsed-off or wiped out without any greasiness or tackiness.

We used 1% chili CO2 extract in this bath oil + arnica macerated oil. The chili extract imparts the beautiful red-orange color as well as warming effect over the skin, joints and muscles and the arnica oil helps relief painful muscles and joints. This is an excellent bath product for winter time or after a heavy workout. Since we kept the dosage of the chili oil by 1% you can even use this product as a shower oil instead of a bath oil.

Since the formulation is really, really, really easy we didn't film the process. You can literally throw everything in a beaker and then stir it with a spatula or a magnetic stirrer at RT. What we show you in video is the difference between the formulation with 15% of the emulsifier and a formulation without the emulsifier.
